St. James Fall Senior Session | Maddie

I say this every time I share photos from Maddie’s Senior Session at St James Farm , but seriously, Maddie is the COOLEST and brought so many ideas to her senior session. Right from the get-go, as soon as we got on the phone she told me she wasn’t really into the smile at the camera traditional senior photos. We went over outfits, she described to me what her personal style was and we put together an AMAZING fall senior session for her at St. James.

Fall Senior Photo Sessions

St. James Forest Farm in the fall is seriously something else. Between the trees that tower over the bike paths and the grasses that fill in the different parts of the farm, there are just rich and vibrant colors EVERYWHERE. The weather, in particular, the first frost of the season tends to decide when the leaves will be as bright as they were for Maddie’s senior session, a safe bet though is always mid-October if you’re really hoping to schedule a session while the farm looks like this.

What to Wear in the Fall

Layers are everyone’s best friend for a fall senior session. Living in the midwest, you never know what kind of weather you will be dealing with when taking your senior photos. Having layers to your outfit whether it be a freaking gorgeous leather jacket like Maddies or a cozy sweater or some denim makes for an easy outfit switch as well as creates dimension to your outfit.

Maddie decided to rock her leather jacket, her maroon striped shirt as her statement piece, and some black denim. Between her layers and her accessories, she had SO much to work with throughout the session making it super fun to shoot.

Incorporating Props

If you’re hoping to incorporate a prop such as your car or even your favorite scooter or bike I highly recommend taking your photos on a weekday or in the morning if possible. With the forest preserve not being as busy on weekdays or mornings there are plenty of spots with a lot of space to park your car and show it off a bit. One of my favorite things to do with seniors has them park in the center of a parking lot where there is a great deal of space and let them show off their wheels. I don’t know about you but I practically LIVED in my car when I was in high school, I really wish I had some photos in it from when I was driving it around.

Maddie’s Second Outfit

I always suggest to my seniors to choose one outfit that has a little bit more movement to it. Having movement makes taking portraits SO much fun as there is so much to work with and move with. Maddie wanted to wear a simple green dress and show off her lacey sweater. The dark colors had just enough contrast with the dried ground to make her pop out of the background in her photos. We were lucky that there were hardly any people at St James Farm for Maddies’ senior session. This made it SO easy to take some really epic photos amongst all the greenery.
